How we test

Every machine we rank spends at least three weeks in a normal, occupied home — hardwood and low-pile rugs, a shedding dog, two children, and no special preparation before a run. Lab conditions tell you what a vacuum can do; a lived-in house tells you what it will do.

We track three things. Coverage: how much of the floor the machine genuinely reaches, including under beds and sofas and along room perimeters. Intervention: how often we had to unstick it, untangle it, empty it or restart it. Displacement: how many times we still reached for a manual vacuum during the test period.

How the ranking is decided

Scores weight real-world outcomes over specifications. A machine with impressive stated suction that tangles with pet hair after a week scores below a modest one that runs daily without attention, because the second one leaves the home cleaner.
