Suction figures, brush design, height, runtime and navigation — a plain-language buying guide to choosing a robot vacuum that fits your home.

Start with your floors, not the spec sheet

The single biggest predictor of whether you will be happy with a robot vacuum is what is on your floor. Hard surfaces and low-pile rugs suit every machine in this category. Deep pile carpet suits almost none of them, because lifting embedded grit out of thick fibre needs a driven brush and downward pressure that a five-pound robot cannot generate.

Before comparing models, walk your home and estimate the split. If more than about a third of the floor area is deep carpet, treat a robot as a supplement to a good upright rather than a replacement for it.

Height decides how much of the floor gets cleaned

Height is the most under-discussed specification and one of the most consequential. A machine that is three inches tall or less gets under most beds, sofas and dressers; anything taller stops at the edge and leaves a permanently uncleaned reservoir of dust in the room.

Measure the gap under the lowest piece of furniture you care about before you buy. It takes thirty seconds and it eliminates most of the disappointment people report after the first week.

Brush design matters more than suction if you have pets

Rotating brush bars agitate carpet well and tangle catastrophically with long hair. The performance loss is gradual, which makes it easy to blame the vacuum rather than the choked brush.

Brushless air-inlet designs give up some carpet agitation and in exchange never tangle. On hard floors and low pile the difference in pickup is small; the difference in maintenance is enormous. For a shedding pet, this is usually the deciding feature.

Suction numbers are close to meaningless in isolation

Pascal figures measure sealed vacuum pressure, not the airflow that actually carries debris into the bin. A machine with high stated pressure and a poor seal, a small inlet or a clogged filter will underperform a modest one that is well designed.

Ignore the headline number. Judge pickup by independent testing and by whether the bin fills, and judge the machine overall by how often it runs.

Navigation: random, systematic or mapped

Random bump navigation is cheapest. Given enough time it covers a room reasonably, but it takes far longer and leaves an unpredictable pattern.

Systematic routing, usually a zigzag with gyroscopic tracking, is the sweet spot for most homes: far quicker than random, far cheaper than mapping, and consistent enough that you stop checking on it.

Full LiDAR mapping with app zones and no-go lines is genuinely useful in large multi-room homes with a specific problem area. In a flat or a small house it mostly adds cost and a setup process.

Runtime and recharging

Around ninety to a hundred and twenty minutes covers a typical one to two bedroom home in a single pass. Larger homes need a machine that returns to base, recharges and resumes, or simply two scheduled runs a day.

Auto-return is close to essential. Without it, the machine strands itself somewhere and the whole hands-off premise collapses.

Noise, and why it is a buying criterion

A loud machine gets scheduled around other people, and scheduling friction is the main reason floors go uncleaned. A quiet machine can run during calls, naps and evenings, which raises frequency.

Frequency is what actually determines cleanliness, so noise is not a comfort feature — it is a performance feature by proxy.

The maintenance you will actually do

Be honest about this. Every robot needs its bin emptied every few runs and its filter rinsed weekly. Brush-roll models additionally need hair cut off the bar every week or two, and almost nobody does it.

Buy for the routine you will keep, not the one you intend to keep. That single principle explains most of the difference between machines that are still in use a year later and machines that are in a cupboard.

Budget: where the money stops buying results

Below about a hundred dollars, build quality and battery life become unreliable. Between roughly one hundred and two hundred and fifty you get the core benefit — daily automated maintenance on hard floors — and this is where most homes should buy.

Above that, you are paying for mapping, self-emptying docks and mopping. Those are conveniences, not step changes in cleanliness, and they add failure points. Spend there only if you have identified a specific problem they solve.

A five-point checklist before you buy

One: measure the gap under your lowest furniture. Two: check the brush design against whether anything in the house sheds. Three: confirm auto-return to base. Four: confirm the bin is easy to empty one-handed. Five: check the return window, because the only real test is three weeks in your own home.

If a model clears all five, the remaining differences between it and a machine costing twice as much will not change how your floors look.
