Indoor Dust, Allergies and Floors: What the Evidence Supports

House dust is mostly skin, fibre and dander, and floors are its main reservoir. What actually reduces indoor allergen load, and what is marketing.

What house dust is actually made of

Household dust is not soil. In a typical home it is dominated by shed human skin cells, textile fibres from clothing and carpet, pet dander where animals are present, and a smaller fraction of outdoor particulate tracked in on shoes and blown through windows.

The allergenic component is mostly biological: dust mite faecal particles, pet dander proteins, and mould spores in damp rooms. Mites feed on skin cells, which is why bedrooms and upholstered furniture — not kitchens — are the highest-load rooms.

This composition explains why cleaning behaviour matters more than cleaning power. The material is continuously produced inside the house by its occupants.

Floors are the reservoir, air is the symptom

Allergen particles are heavier than air and spend most of their time settled. They become a breathing problem when disturbed — footsteps, sitting down on a sofa, making a bed.

That means air purifiers address the symptom while the reservoir keeps refilling it. A purifier is genuinely useful, but it works on what is already airborne, and floors keep supplying more.

Reducing the reservoir is therefore the higher-leverage intervention, and the reservoir is concentrated in carpet, rugs, upholstery, bedding, and the undisturbed floor beneath furniture.

What reduces allergen load, ranked by evidence

Removing carpet in bedrooms has the strongest effect where it is practical, because carpet is both a reservoir and a re-emitter. Hard floors hold a fraction of the load and release it to a vacuum far more completely.

Washing bedding weekly at sixty degrees or above is the next most effective step and the cheapest. Lower temperatures do not reliably kill mites.

Frequent vacuuming with a sealed machine and a fine filter comes next. The sealing matters: a machine that leaks at the seams exhausts fine particles back into the room, which is why cheap unsealed vacuums can raise airborne counts during use.

Controlling humidity below about fifty percent suppresses both mite populations and mould, and is often the missing piece in older damp homes.

The under-furniture blind spot

The space under beds, sofas and dressers is undisturbed, poorly ventilated and rarely reached. It accumulates a disproportionate share of a home's dust and, in bedrooms, sits directly beneath where someone breathes for eight hours.

Most full-size vacuum heads cannot enter a gap under about four inches. The result is a permanently uncleaned zone in the room that most needs cleaning.

A slim automated machine that can enter that gap on a routine schedule addresses a genuine gap in conventional cleaning, and it is the clearest allergen-related argument for the format.

What is mostly marketing

Ultraviolet lamps on the underside of a vacuum do not meaningfully sterilise a floor at walking speed; contact time is far too short.

Ionisers that promise to precipitate allergens can generate ozone, which is an irritant in its own right. Filtration is the safer mechanism.

Very high suction figures quoted in pascals are largely decoupled from real-world pickup, which depends on airflow, seal quality, head design and how often the machine runs.

Scented cleaning products add volatile organic compounds without removing anything, and the perceived cleanliness they create is a fragrance effect rather than a reduction in load.

A realistic plan for an allergy household

Start with the bedroom, because it delivers the largest exposure reduction per unit of effort: hard flooring if possible, weekly hot bedding washes, and a genuine clean of the space under the bed rather than around it.

Automate a daily pass across hard floors so the reservoir never builds. Keep one sealed manual machine with a good filter for a monthly deep clean of upholstery and edges.

Add a filter-based purifier in the bedroom last, once the reservoir is under control, so it is working on a smaller supply.

None of these steps is dramatic. Combined and sustained, they change how a house feels to breathe in within a few weeks.
